Malaysian couple detained for smuggling RM2.9 million toward Singapore

A Malaysian husband and wife, aged 41 and 42, were detained by the Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) at the Sultan Iskandar Building Customs, Immigration, and Quarantine (CIQ) complex in Johor Bahru. The couple was attempting to transport approximately RM2.9 million in undeclared cash toward Singapore in a white Toyota Alphard.

Authorities discovered RM1,971,697 in Malaysian Ringgit and SGD 300,000 (approximately RM955,441) hidden in three boxes, a paper bag, and a black backpack. The seizure occurred after the driver exhibited suspicious behavior during questioning at the vehicle inspection zone.

The suspects claimed they were traveling to Singapore for tourism, but officials are investigating the true purpose of the large sum. Both individuals, identified as businesspeople, were detained and the vehicle was seized. The case is being investigated under Regulation 55(1)(b) of the Customs Regulations 2019, as any movement of cash exceeding USD 10,000 must be declared.
