Malaysian courts charge men in fatal murder and restaurant assault cases

Three men were charged at the Tangkak magistrates’ court with the murder of 38‑year‑old Tong Wee Sheng, who was slashed to death with parangs on March 13 in Sungai Mati, Tangkak. The accused – Pan Wei Siang, 24; Henry Lau, 26; and Tan Ah Chai, 32 – face a Section 302 charge that carries the death penalty or up to 40 years in prison, along with a separate unlawful society offence for Tan. A fourth suspect remains at large. The court set a July 14 mention date.

In a separate Kuala Lumpur case, three men – Wong Weng Luen, Lai Kae Bin and Wan Ken Fei – were denied bail after being charged with voluntarily causing grievous hurt with dangerous weapons at a Kepong restaurant on May 7. The Section 326 charge carries up to 20 years’ imprisonment. Their counsel argued that media attention should not replace judicial discretion, noting prison overcrowding, but the prosecution emphasized the seriousness of the offence.
