Malaysian immigration officer charged with bribe for protecting undocumented foreign worker

Mohd. Nazrul Md. Yasin, a 39‑year‑old immigration enforcement officer in Melaka, Malaysia, appeared before the Ayer Keroh Sessions Court on seven counts of taking bribes totalling RM1,950. Prosecutors allege he accepted cash payments of RM300 to RM150 from a 69‑year‑old man and transferred amounts from the woman’s bank account in exchange for failing to act against a 23‑year‑old woman who was sheltering an undocumented foreign worker. Nazrul pleaded not guilty. The prosecution sought a RM20,000 bail and additional conditions, including surrendering his passport and monthly reporting to the anti‑corruption agency. The court set bail at RM12,000 with a guarantor and retained the conditions. Under the Anti‑Corruption Commission Act 2009, each charge carries up to 20 years imprisonment and a fine of either five times the bribe amount or RM10,000, whichever is higher.
