Malaysia law enforcement corruption involving foreigners

In mid‑July 2026 Malaysian authorities launched a series of investigations into misconduct by officials targeting foreign residents. Two Kedah police officers were detained for allegedly robbing foreign households of cash, IDs and personal items, and a raid in Sarawak led to the arrest of a foreign labourer for drug possession; the officers faced charges carrying up to 14 years imprisonment.

A week later an immigration enforcement officer in Melaka, Mohd Nazrul Md Yasin, was charged with seven counts of taking bribes totalling RM1,950 to shield an undocumented foreign worker. He pleaded not guilty; the court set bail at RM12,000 and retained reporting conditions, with each charge punishable by up to 20 years imprisonment.

On 20 July the Nazrul case proceeded with the bail and conditions detailed above. On 27 July a broader anti‑corruption sweep saw the Royal Malaysia Police’s Integrity and Standards Compliance Department open a disciplinary probe into twelve officers suspected of extorting a foreign national for RM2 million. Simultaneously, the Malaysian Anti‑Corruption Commission arrested twelve individuals—including six immigration officers, a police officer and several company directors—for operating a syndicate that fabricated 1,306 temporary work passes, costing the government an estimated RM2.4 million. The investigations underscore an expanding crackdown on corruption within Malaysia’s police and immigration services, particularly where foreign nationals are affected.
