Malaysian Woman Arrested in Nigeria for Smuggling 31kg Cannabis

A 63‑year‑old Malaysian woman, identified as Ting Hung Kiong, was detained at Lagos’s Murtala Muhammed International Airport on 17 May after Nigerian National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) officers found two large travel boxes containing about 31 kg of synthetic cannabis known as “Canadian Loud”.

Investigators traced her journey from Malaysia to Thailand, where she reportedly spent two weeks, before she flew via Dubai on an Emirates airline to Nigeria. The suspect said her daughter had sponsored the trip and handed her the consignment at the Thailand airport. Malaysia’s Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) and the NDLEA are cooperating, and Thai authorities have also been contacted as part of the probe.

Nigeria has recently tightened drug‑trafficking penalties, making the death penalty the maximum sentence for such offences, highlighting the seriousness of the case.
