Nepal-Tibet border floods leave numerous international pilgrims missing

Catastrophic flash floods, potentially triggered by a glacier collapse, have devastated the border region between Nepal and Tibet, leaving numerous international pilgrims missing. The disaster, which seismic monitors briefly registered as an earthquake, has struck the Rasuwa district and impacted the Trishuli river system.

Reports indicate significant numbers of missing persons from various nations. Approximately 90 U.S. citizens are unaccounted for, though three Americans have been rescued. An 80-member Isha Foundation pilgrimage group is also missing. Additionally, Malaysian authorities are tracking at least 57 citizens who have lost contact, including a climbing group known as Team Loe believed to be in two pickup trucks near the disaster zone.

Rescue operations are ongoing, utilizing helicopters to transport the injured to Kathmandu. Local authorities in Nepal have confirmed the rescue of 31 foreign nationals so far. Communication remains severely disrupted, with roads blocked and telecommunications down in the affected mountainous areas.
