Maldives cave diving tragedy: Autopsies reveal divers died of anoxia
Autopsy results have revealed that five Italian divers died from anoxia after running out of air in their tanks while exploring an underwater cave in the Vaavu Atoll, Maldives. The tragedy occurred on May 14 during a dive at a depth of approximately 60 meters.
The victims included marine biologist Monica Montefalcone, her daughter Giorgia Sommacal, researchers Muriel Oddenino and Federico Gualtieri, and diving instructor Gianluca Benedetti. The group was involved in marine conservation research and held professional certifications.
Forensic experts have ruled out other theories, such as shark attacks or toxic gas exposure. While the cause of death is identified as oxygen deprivation, investigators are still working to determine how the situation escalated, specifically looking into whether the divers became disoriented within the cave system. The investigation continues to cross medical findings with an analysis of the diving equipment and computers used.
