Maldives cave diving fatalities investigation
Overview
Five Italian divers died from anoxia, or a total lack of oxygen, during a cave diving expedition in the Vaavu Atoll, Maldives, on May 14. The victims included marine biologist Monica Montefalcone, her daughter Giorgia Sommacal, researchers Muriel Oddenino and Federico Gualtieri, and diving instructor Gianluca Benedetti.
Autopsy results conducted in Italy have ruled out alternative causes of death, such as shark attacks, toxic gas contamination in the tanks, or loss of consciousness due to external substances.
Investigators are currently focusing on why the group remained at a depth of approximately 60 meters beyond the capacity of their equipment. Authorities are working to determine if the divers became disoriented within the cave system and are cross-referencing medical findings with technical data from recovered dive computers, oxygen tanks, and GoPro cameras to reconstruct the sequence of events.
