Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu Calls for SAARC Revival
At the Maldives' 61st Independence Day ceremony, President Mohamed Muizzu said the country is ready to help revive the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC), which has been inactive for nine years. He urged all member states to return to the negotiation table, offering the Maldives to act as a mediator. The last SAARC summit was held in Kathmandu in November 2014, and the scheduled 19th summit in Pakistan for 2016 was cancelled because of a lack of consensus and cross‑border terrorism concerns. SAARC’s eight members – India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan – together represent nearly 1.9 billion people, about 24 % of the world’s population, with a combined GDP of roughly USD 5 trillion.
China’s President Xi Jinping also sent a congratulatory message to President Muizzu, praising the long history of friendly ties between the two nations. India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar extended greetings to Maldives Foreign Minister Iruthisham Adam on the occasion. Bangladesh’s foreign affairs minister Shoma Obeid called for stronger implementation capacity and financial robustness to revive SAARC.
