SAARC revival efforts in South Asia

During the Maldives' 61st Independence Day ceremony on 26 July 2026, President Mohamed Muizzu urged the revival of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC), offering the Maldives as a mediator and calling on all members to return to the negotiation table. He highlighted the bloc’s potential to promote peace and development across its eight member states and received congratulatory messages from China and greetings from India.

Three days later, on 29 July 2026, India’s Ministry of External Affairs blamed Pakistan for hindering the SAARC revival, accusing it of supporting cross‑border terrorism that stalls regional cooperation. The Indian statement referenced Muizzu’s earlier appeal for dialogue and noted Bangladesh’s support for stronger implementation mechanisms and financial capacity within SAARC. The two snapshots illustrate a shift from a broad regional call for revival to the emergence of bilateral friction that could impede the process.
