Male breast cancer in Brazil often diagnosed at advanced stages

The Brazilian Society of Radiotherapy (SBRT) has issued an alert regarding male breast cancer, noting that men often discover the disease at more advanced stages than women. Data from the National Cancer Institute (Inca) and Hospital Cancer Registries (RHC) between 2020 and 2023 identified 2,126 cases of breast cancer in men out of more than 163,000 total recorded cases.

According to the SBRT, male cases represented 1.30% of the total breast cancer diagnoses during that period. A significant concern is the stage of diagnosis; approximately 29.95% of men were diagnosed at stage IV, and 62.29% were diagnosed at either stage III or IV. This indicates that metastasis is proportionally more frequent among men.

Inca estimates that Brazil will face 781,000 new cancer cases annually between 2026 and 2028. Wilson José de Almeida Jr., president of the SBRT, emphasized the need for public awareness to prevent lethal outcomes associated with late-stage diagnoses in the male population.
