Mali rebels kill dozens, capture towns in July 4 coordinated attacks

On 4 July 2026 a coordinated offensive was launched in Mali by the Tuareg Liberation Front (FLA) and the Al‑Qaeda‑linked JNIM group. The insurgents struck multiple locations – Anefis, Aguelhoc, Gao, Sevare and the Kenieroba prison complex near Bamako – using ground forces, drones and air support.

Malian armed forces, backed by Russia’s Africa Corps, said the fighting was contained and reported killing more than 20 militants, while acknowledging a single soldier casualty in Gao. Rebel statements claimed the capture of the strategic town of Anefis and a breach of the Kenieroba detention centre, which holds over 2,500 inmates. The African Union condemned the attacks, expressed condolences to victims’ families, and urged stronger regional cooperation against terrorism.

The wave of violence underscores the fragile security situation in the Sahel and challenges the military junta that has ruled Mali since the 2020‑21 coups.
