Mali insurgents launch coordinated attacks on bases and Kéniéroba prison

Early on Saturday, around 04:00 GMT, armed insurgents struck multiple locations across Mali. The assaults hit military installations in the northern cities of Gao and Anefis, the central town of Sévaré, and the high‑security Kéniéroba prison on the outskirts of Bamako.

Malian authorities said the attacks were carried out by a joint effort of the jihadist group Jama’at Nusrat al‑Islam wal‑Muslimin (JNIM) and the Tuareg separatist Azawad Liberation Front (FLA). The coordinated offensive reflects growing cooperation between the two groups, which have previously operated separately. The prison houses several high‑profile militants, prompting fears that the assault aimed to free inmates or undermine state control.

Security forces engaged the attackers in sustained gunfire and explosions, but casualty figures and whether any prisoners escaped have not yet been confirmed. The incidents follow earlier joint offensives by the same groups that captured northern positions and killed a defence minister. Analysts note the attacks exacerbate Mali’s already fragile security situation and raise concerns for civilians caught between insurgents and the military.
