Mali army repels rebel attacks on multiple towns, says security situation under control

On July 4, 2026, Malian armed forces announced that coordinated attacks by insurgent groups, including the Tuareg‑led Azawad Liberation Front, struck several locations in the north and centre of the country. The towns targeted were Anefis, Aguelhok, Gao, Sévaré and the southern outpost of Kenioroba. The army said the assaults were repelled, killing around 20 militants in Sévaré and six in Gao, and destroying a rebel vehicle. Casualties among government troops included one soldier killed and four wounded in Gao. The statement added that “the situation is fully under control” and that aerial and ground clearing operations continue.

The attacks follow a wave of violence in April that saw the defence minister assassinated and a series of army bases seized. Russian paramilitary units were reported to be present in some of the affected positions.
