African Union condemns July 2026 terrorist attacks in Niger and Mali

The president of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, condemned coordinated terrorist assaults carried out on 17‑18 July 2026 against the armed forces of Niger and Mali. In Niger, an attack on the Bankilaré‑Téra axis left at least 16 soldiers dead and 23 injured. In Mali, a convoy moving from Anéfis to Gao was ambushed, killing more than 50 soldiers and capturing at least 24.

Youssouf called for an accelerated regional response, including intensified intelligence sharing, reinforced cross‑border patrols and sustained financial support for African anti‑terrorism initiatives. The heavy losses have intensified a legitimacy crisis for the Malian junta led by Colonel Assimi Goïta, whose rule has been undermined by repeated security failures. Subsequent Malian operations, such as the 21 July action near Kouakourou that neutralised five militants, illustrate ongoing combat efforts. Reports also allege that JNIM jihadists executed captured Malian soldiers, highlighting grave human‑rights concerns.

The AU pledged continued political and diplomatic backing to the Sahel states, urging coordinated action to curb the jihadist threat that endangers regional stability and civilian populations.
