Mali military camp attack kills dozens of soldiers and Russian paramilitaries

A major jihadist attack on the Dioura military camp in central Mali on Thursday, September 10, has resulted in significant casualties among Malian soldiers and Russian paramilitaries. The Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM), an Al-Qaida affiliate, claimed responsibility for the offensive.

Reports on the death toll vary, with security sources and local officials estimating between 50 and 80 Malian soldiers killed. At least five members of the Russian paramilitary group Africa Corps were confirmed dead. Additionally, dozens of Malian soldiers were reportedly taken prisoner during the assault.

The attackers utilized a multi-directional strategy, involving foot soldiers, motorcycles, and heavily armed vehicles to seize control of the camp before withdrawing. In response, the Malian army announced it has launched aero-terrestrial operations to pursue the assailants and has neutralized several militants attempting to hide in nearby vegetation.
