Mali military conducts strikes amid rising jihadist attacks
Mali is facing intensified conflict as jihadist groups and separatist movements launch a series of attacks across the country. The Groupe de soutien de l’islam et des musulmans (GSIM), an al-Qaida affiliate, has increased its operations, claiming over 150 casualties in recent clashes, while Malian authorities report approximately 50 deaths, including at least five Russian paramilitary officers.
In response to these threats, the Malian Armed Forces (FAMa) have launched Operation Dougoukoloko. On October 3, 2026, military forces conducted precision strikes against terrorist positions located approximately 40 kilometers south of Koutiala. These strikes targeted fortified sites containing armed vehicles and war materiel.
The security situation remains volatile, with recent attacks utilizing stolen military equipment, including trucks, motorcycles, and hundreds of assault rifles. Malian transitional leader Assimi Goïta has held emergency meetings to address the ongoing instability, particularly following attacks in the Sévaré airport zone.
