Malian military operations and counter-terrorism efforts

Overview

The Malian Armed Forces (FAMa) have expanded military operations under Operation Dougoukoloko, a nationwide initiative launched in April 2025 to combat terrorist groups and criminal networks. Initial actions included a strike against an armed group logistics site in the Timbuktu region's Modiakoy sector. Concurrently, the military announced a specialized recruitment drive for Special Forces units. Operations have since intensified across multiple regions, including the North-East, Gao, Ménaka, Aguelhoc, Diéma, and Bandiagara sectors.

In September 2026, FAMa conducted a major air-land operation in the Dioura sector to evacuate two companies from a military garrison following over a week of intense combat. The Malian General Staff reported that strikes against positions held by elements of the FLA, JNIM, and foreign fighters inflicted heavy losses on attackers, though the operation also resulted in casualties among Malian forces. Intelligence-led strikes also targeted terrorist concentrations southeast of Djenné, bases northwest of Sévaré, and fuel logistics depots in Ber.

Following these actions, FAMa expanded its offensive through intelligence-led precision strikes. On September 21, 2026, forces targeted two retreat zones east of Kidal containing war materiel and logistics equipment. On September 24, 2026, reconnaissance identified and neutralized fortified positions north of Dandougou, which reportedly housed between 200 and 300 combatants. On September 26, 2026, strikes near Abeïbara, approximately 45 kilometers northeast of Kidal, resulted in the neutralization of at least 50 militants, including several leaders.

In mid-October 2026, FAMa continued precision strikes against terrorist bases, targeting a major site 65 km southwest of Ménaka on October 17 and an armed group concentration point 35 km southwest of Douentza on October 18. On October 20 and 21, operations in the Talhandak and Ménaka regions targeted a regrouping point northwest of Talhandak and a terrorist vehicle hidden southeast of Ménaka.
