Malian transitional leader Assimi Goïta has granted a presidential pardon to Yann Vézilier, a French intelligence agent previously sentenced to 20 years in prison for allegedly plotting against the state. The pardon includes an order for Vézilier’s immediate departure from Mali. While the Malian government stated the pardon does not overturn the legal conviction or the established facts of the case, the French government expressed “very great satisfaction” regarding his release, having previously dismissed the espionage allegations as “unfounded.”

In a separate development, the Malian army announced the release of 82 soldiers who had been held captive by the al-Qaeda-linked group JNIM and the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA). The release was described as the result of a mediation process, with diplomatic sources suggesting Algeria played a key role, though the Malian government only credited an unnamed “brotherly country.”

In Chad, President Mahamat Idriss Déby has also issued presidential pardons. Among the beneficiaries is opposition leader and former Prime Minister Succès Masra, who was serving a 20-year sentence. Nine other political figures also received partial sentence reductions, though the pardons do not eliminate civil penalties or fines.
