Mali pursues diplomatic engagement with Algeria and the United States

Mali is actively pursuing diplomatic engagement with both regional and international partners. On September 9-10, 2026, Bamako will host the 13th session of the Great Mixed Commission for Cooperation between Mali and Algeria. This high-level meeting, the first in several years, aims to revitalize bilateral ties across political, economic, commercial, and cultural sectors to foster regional stability in the Sahelo-Saharan space.

Separately, Malian Foreign Minister Abdoulaye Diop expressed a desire to maintain friendly relations with the United States based on mutual respect. Speaking during a farewell event for outgoing U.S. Ambassador Rachna Korhonen, Diop emphasized the importance of keeping dialogue open despite recent tensions. Discussions highlighted potential continued cooperation in mining, agro-industry, technology, and scientific research, including malaria studies, even as Mali remains ineligible for the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA).
