Mali security partnership with Russia faces pressure

The security partnership between the Malian military junta and Russia’s Africa Corps is facing intense scrutiny following a series of deadly attacks and allegations of human rights abuses.

In September 2026, the Al-Qaeda-affiliated Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (GSIM) launched a major attack on the Dioura military camp in the Mopti region. Reports indicate at least 100 Malian soldiers may have been killed, along with five members of the Africa Corps, though exact figures remain difficult to verify. This follows another ambush near Kaka where a joint patrol of Malian forces and Africa Corps personnel was targeted.

Beyond combat losses, the Malian military and its Russian allies face severe accusations regarding their conduct toward civilian populations. Reports describe systematic human rights violations and the use of terror tactics against nomadic communities, including the Tuareg, Moor, and Fulani. These allegations include indiscriminate killings, the destruction of vital infrastructure, and the looting of property in desert regions.
