Malian forces retake Kidal as displaced populations return to Masisi
In Mali, the Malian Armed Forces (FAMa) have retaken the city of Kidal following operations under ‘Operation Dougoukoloko’. The takeover follows a period of control by the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) and JNIM. While the government has announced the progressive return of administration and basic social services, the security situation remains complex. The FLA has characterized its departure as a ‘strategic and controlled withdrawal’ to preserve its resources, and armed groups continue to maintain operational capacity in the region.
Securing the city and its vital supply routes, such as the road to Gao and connections to Tessalit and Aguelhoc, is essential for the return of displaced populations and the restoration of public services.
In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, displaced populations in the Masisi territory of North Kivu have begun a fragile return to villages such as Remeka and Biolo following a brief period of calm. However, the security situation remains precarious due to ongoing violence. Local civil society reports that drone strikes attributed to the M23 have targeted villages like Musimba and Shovu. Returning families face significant humanitarian needs, including a lack of essential medicines and basic necessities, as local health centers struggle with supply shortages.
