Malian military repels attack on San infantry regiment camp

The Malian Armed Forces (FAMa) repelled an attack on the 23rd Infantry Regiment camp in San on Sunday, August 9. The assault began around 5:30 a.m. and involved heavy machine guns, kamikaze drones, payload-dropping drones, and two armored vehicles. One vehicle was used to breach the camp's perimeter wall to facilitate the infiltration.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces reported that the military regained control of the site after intense combat. Initial military assessments indicate that over fifty attackers were neutralized, with many wounded individuals reportedly retreating from the scene. The military confirmed casualties among its own ranks and expressed condolences to the families of the fallen soldiers.

San is a strategic location on the axis connecting Bamako and Mopti, serving as a key security hub in central Mali. This incident follows a period of increased military operations in the region, including the 'Dougoukoloko' offensive launched in late July against armed group logistics. Security measures around the camp have been reinforced following the engagement.
