Mali security forces strike JNIM/FLA leaders in July 2026 operations
On 30‑31 July 2026 the Malian army, under Operation Dougoukoloko, carried out precision strikes on gatherings of JNIM/FLA leaders in the periphery of Bandiagara, north‑east of Kouakourou and the Gourma‑Rharous circle. The attacks neutralised several militants, destroyed two armed vehicles and eliminated stocks of ammunition, including artillery shells.
During the same week forces also engaged hostile groups near Mourdiah, Dagabory and Tessalit, killing four combatants and seizing a pick‑up, three PKM machine‑guns and three pistols‑mitrailleuses. Additional armed pick‑ups were destroyed in follow‑up raids.
These operations follow a broader escalation after Jama’at Nusrat al‑Islam wal‑Muslimin (JNIM) and the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) formed a tactical coordination alliance, launched massive simultaneous attacks across Mali in April – the first coordinated strikes in a decade – and earlier this month ambushed a Malian military convoy, capturing or killing dozens of soldiers.
According to ACLED, militant fatalities rose 35 % to 3,435 in the first seven months of 2025 versus 2,546 in the same period of 2024. Analysts say the groups act as “force multipliers” and share a common enemy: the Malian armed forces and Russia’s Africa Corps paramilitary unit. They have also agreed that once northern Mali attains independence, local communities will decide which version of sharia law to apply.
