Overview

In late April 2026 a new battlefield partnership emerged in northern Mali when the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) joined forces with the al‑Qaeda‑linked JNIM. The joint offensive targeted Kidal, Anefis, Tilemsi, Gao and Sevare, forcing the Malian army and Russia‑backed Africa Corps to confront a coordinated threat that threatens to overturn the 2015 Algiers Peace Accord.

At the same time, insurgent networks across the wider Sahel – including GSIM, EIGS and other groups operating in Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger – have shifted from open desert raids to covert tactics that embed fighters within villages and markets. This blending of combatants with civilians fuels ambushes, school closures and population displacement, prompting calls for a broader strategy beyond mercenary forces, involving political reconciliation, restoration of civil services and regional security partnerships.
