Mallorca beach amenities spark controversy over high prices

Environmental group GOB (Grup Balear d'Ornitologia i Defensa de la Naturaleza) is calling for an investigation into excessive pricing for beach amenities at Cala Major in Mallorca. The group argues that public beaches are being treated as luxury goods, restricting access based on purchasing power.

According to the organization, current prices significantly exceed the figures established in the municipal tender's economic calculations. While the tender reportedly anticipated costs of six euros for a sunbed and six euros for an umbrella, current rates at Cala Major include 15 euros for an umbrella and 25 euros for two sunbeds. A premium package, which includes two sunbeds, an umbrella, and a safe, is being offered for 125 euros per day.

Environmentalists intend to involve the Direcció General de Costes i Litoral to address these irregularities, asserting that the use of public beaches should not be determined by a visitor's wealth.
