Economic and environmental challenges in Mallorca

Overview

Mallorca continues to face economic and environmental challenges. The tourism sector experienced a significant downturn during the peak summer months of July and August, with 20% to 25% of the yacht rental fleet remaining idle. While demand from the US and Argentina has grown, it has not offset declines from traditional European markets.

Despite a rising trend in shoulder-season tourism—with Zafiro Hotels reporting a 41% increase in such travel since 2019 and specific demand for October bookings rising—the restaurant sector is facing a difficult transition. The start of September has been marked as one of the worst on record for local restaurants. Juan Miguel Ferrer, president of Restauración Mallorca CAEB, noted that the decline follows a weak end to August, highlighting that the issue is not a lack of visitors, but a decrease in the “capacity and willingness of tourists to spend money once they arrive.”

This shift in consumer spending occurs alongside broader debates regarding the island’s economic model. There are growing calls to address systemic issues, including housing affordability, infrastructure pressure, and mobility, to ensure economic growth aligns with the quality of life for residents. Simultaneously, the island’s agricultural heritage remains under threat from extreme heatwaves and drought, while tensions persist regarding water quality, overtourism, and the pricing of beach amenities.
