Mallorca begins llampuga fishing season with abundant supply
The seasonal sale of llampuga (dentex) has commenced in Mallorca, with significant availability reported in markets such as Sóller and the Mercat de l'Olivar. This year's campaign has seen an early arrival of large, high-quality specimens, which has contributed to more competitive pricing compared to previous years.
In some markets, prices for large specimens have been recorded between 14.80 and 18 euros per kilo, while smaller pieces have been available for as low as 8 euros. Vendors note that the abundance and size of the initial catch have facilitated quick sales and made the fish more affordable for consumers than in prior seasons, where prices for large pieces sometimes reached 24 euros per kilo.
The fishing campaign involves 35 vessels based in Mallorca and is expected to continue until the end of the year, though local fishing activities typically wind down in November. Last year, the sector captured approximately 114,459 kilograms of llampuga, generating over 646,000 euros in revenue. Authorities expect similar volumes and economic results for the current season.
