Mallorca faces threats to traditional cuisine and agriculture

Traditional culinary practices and agricultural heritage in Mallorca are facing significant threats due to environmental and social changes. Experts warn that much of the island's traditional recipe book could disappear within thirty years if current trends in tourism massification and changing consumption habits continue.

In the agricultural sector, extreme heatwaves are severely impacting the production of the traditional ramellet tomato. In Petra, farmers report that yields have dropped to less than half of a normal harvest. The lack of cooling temperatures at night prevents plants from recovering, a problem compounded by ongoing drought conditions that necessitate increased irrigation.

Agriculturalists suggest that if these high temperatures become the norm, the cultivation of this specific tomato variety may become unviable. There is an urgent call for research into new varieties that are more heat-resistant and require less water to ensure the survival of the crop.
