Mallorca infrastructure works progress to prevent future flooding

The Consell de Mallorca is investing nine million euros to expand the bridge over the Ses Planes torrent to prevent a recurrence of the 2018 flash flood that caused 13 deaths. The project, which began in April, is currently halfway complete.

Key improvements include increasing the number of water passages from four to ten. These new passages measure 5.7 meters wide and 4.4 meters high. Additionally, over 200 meters of reinforcement walls are being installed to channel the torrent. Once finished, the bridge will be capable of absorbing up to 500 tons of water per second, which officials state would be sufficient to handle precipitation levels similar to the 2018 disaster.

The road is expected to reopen to traffic between January and February of next year.
