Mallorca lampuga fishing season begins with 35 vessels

The professional lampuga fishing season has commenced in the Balearic Islands, running from August 25 through December 31. A total of 35 vessels based in Mallorca are participating in the campaign, which holds significant economic, social, and cultural importance for the local artisanal fishing fleet.

Last year, the season yielded 114,459 kilograms of lampuga, generating approximately 646,273 euros for the sector. The General Directorate of Fisheries expects results for the current campaign to be similar to previous years, with typical catches ranging between 80 and 120 tons.

This marks the third year that a Total Allowable Catch (TAC) has been established to ensure sustainable resource management. Joan Simonet, the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Natural Environment, emphasized that the goal is to maintain this traditional activity while guaranteeing the future of the species through sustainable practices.
