Malta confronts energy minister no‑confidence motion amid blackout crisis and receives EU aid after storm Harry

Prolonged blackouts during a record‑heat wave have left thousands of Maltese households and businesses without power for more than six hours. In response, the opposition Nationalist Party moved a no‑confidence motion against Energy Minister Miriam Dalli, accusing the government of failing to ensure a vital service. The party demands Dalli's resignation and the government has pledged compensation for those affected while Enemalta works on network upgrades.

Separately, the European Union approved an advance payment of €931,014 for Malta under the EU Solidarity Fund after storm Harry struck the archipelago on 19‑21 January 2026. The storm caused widespread flooding, coastal damage and disruptions to transport, ports, fisheries, aquaculture and agriculture, prompting the aid to support reconstruction and recovery efforts.
