Record‑breaking temperatures above 42 °C in July 2026 strained Malta’s electricity distribution network, triggering widespread blackouts that left thousands of households and businesses without power for more than six hours. The government reiterated its compensation scheme and continued network upgrades through Enemalta.

Separately, the European Union approved an advance payment of €931,014 from the EU Solidarity Fund to support Malta’s recovery from storm Harry, which had earlier caused flooding and damage to infrastructure, agriculture and fisheries. The aid is intended for reconstruction and to bolster resilience against future extreme weather events.
