Malta Government Announces Compensation for Households Affected by Heatwave Power Outages

Prime Minister Robert Abela issued an unconditional apology after record‑breaking temperatures above 42 °C caused widespread power cuts across Malta. The outages, linked to the electricity distribution network rather than generation, left thousands of households without power and increased pressure on Mater Dei Hospital's emergency department. The government pledged to accelerate the installation of underground cables to improve network resilience.

Energy Minister Miriam Dalli announced that households and businesses that suffered cuts lasting more than six hours will be eligible for compensation under a scheme previously used in exceptional circumstances. The heatwave drove electricity demand to a new peak of 741 MW, far above the 663 MW record set in 2023, placing exceptional strain on the grid. Officials thanked Enemalta staff for working in extreme conditions and urged the public to cooperate while restoration efforts continue.
