Maltepe shooting: Tenant kills landlord couple and wounds attorney

A fatal shooting occurred in the Maltepe district of Istanbul following a dispute between a tenant and a landlord. Mehmet Taşkaya, a 63-year-old tenant, allegedly opened fire on Osman Akyol (61) and his wife Nursen Akyol (61), killing both at the scene. An attorney, Emir Ali Spor, was also seriously wounded in the attack.

The motive appears to stem from a long-standing financial disagreement. Taşkaya had reportedly managed the building for the owners, who reside in Germany, for approximately 20 years. Reports indicate the dispute involved a claim by Taşkaya regarding $500,000 in expenses he had spent on building maintenance and repairs.

Following the shooting, Taşkaya engaged in a standoff with police and security forces, firing at them before being apprehended by special operations units. A search of his residence uncovered a large cache of weapons and ammunition, including two unlicensed pistols, a rifle, a sword, knives, and hundreds of rounds of ammunition. Taşkaya has been arrested on murder charges.
