Maltepe shooting: Tenant kills landlord couple and wounds lawyer
A violent dispute between a landlord and tenant in the Maltepe district of Istanbul resulted in the deaths of Osman Akyol and his wife, Nursen Akyol. The suspect, identified as 63-year-old tenant Mehmet T., opened fire during an argument, also seriously wounding an attorney, Emir Ali Spor, who was present at the scene.
Following the shooting, the suspect engaged in a standoff with police and medical teams before being apprehended by special operations officers. A search of the suspect's residence uncovered a significant cache of weapons and ammunition, including unlicensed handguns, a sword, knives, and hundreds of rounds of ammunition.
In his statement to authorities, Mehmet T. claimed the violence stemmed from a long-standing dispute regarding the building's ownership and unpaid renovation costs, which he estimated at $350,000. He alleged that the landlords, who reside in Germany, had attempted to evict him, leading to the confrontation. The suspect has been arrested and remains in custody.
