Maltepe building collapse and investigation
Overview
In October 2026, a seven-story building in the Cevizli Neighborhood of Maltepe, Istanbul, collapsed, resulting in five deaths. During the incident, 14 people were trapped under rubble, though nine were rescued alive.
Authorities arrested the building’s architect, Hasan Balcı, and site manager, Mevlüt Okumuş, on charges of “taksirle öldürme” (manslaughter). While an expert report identified both individuals as being at fault, both suspects denied technical responsibility during questioning. Investigations indicated that although council decisions were made in 1989 and 1990 to demolish certain floors built without permits, those decisions were never carried out.
