Mamata Banerjee condemns assault on Calcutta High Court lawyer

Mamata Banerjee has condemned the alleged assault on Shamim Ahmed, a Calcutta High Court advocate and newly elected member of the Bar Council of West Bengal. The incident occurred near the Salboni police station in the West Midnapore district.

Reports indicate that a group of lawyers from the Calcutta High Court and Midnapore court were targeted multiple times using sticks, shovels, and bamboo. The attacks reportedly resulted in injuries to three male lawyers and two female lawyers, with the women also alleging harassment. During the incident, three vehicles were vandalized. Ahmed reportedly returned home safely following the intervention of the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court.

Banerjee expressed deep concern that Ahmed was pressured to alter his complaint following the attack. She characterized the situation as a culture of intimidation and ‘JUNGLE RAJ’, urging the administration to take firm, impartial action to ensure the safety of advocates. Banerjee attributed the repeated attacks on legal professionals to BJP workers, a claim the BJP has denied.
