West Bengal lawyer security protests

Overview

Lawyers in West Bengal have initiated strikes and protests following a series of physical attacks on legal professionals at various courts. In Howrah, advocates blocked roads and observed strikes to demand the arrest of culprits and the implementation of the Lawyers Security Protection Act. These incidents included an assault at Baruipur Court and a melee at Bankshall Court involving the production of an accused YouTuber.

Following further violence in the West Midnapore district, where a group of lawyers was reportedly targeted with sticks, shovels, and bamboo, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee condemned the assaults. Banerjee characterized the situation as a culture of intimidation and ‘JUNGLE RAJ’, expressing concern that victims were being pressured to alter their complaints. While Banerjee attributed the attacks to BJP workers, the BJP has denied these claims.
