Trinamool Congress dispute: Supreme Court to hear Mamata Banerjee's plea

The Supreme Court of India has agreed to hear an urgent plea from Mamata Banerjee challenging the Election Commission of India’s (ECI) decision to freeze the Trinamool Congress (TMC) name and its ‘flowers-and-grass’ symbol. The freeze occurred amid an ongoing dispute between two rival factions of the party.

To facilitate the upcoming October 6 by-elections in Nandigram and Rejinagar, the ECI issued an interim order barring both groups from using the original party name and symbol. Instead, the Mamata Banerjee-led faction was allotted the interim name ‘Mamata All India Trinamool Congress’ and a ‘football player’ symbol, while the rival faction led by Arup Roy received the name ‘Democratic Trinamool Congress’ and an ‘envelope’ symbol.

Separately, the Calcutta High Court has extended an interim order allowing the Mamata Banerjee faction to continue operating three party bank accounts that were previously frozen by police. The court noted that the ECI’s interim arrangement regarding names and symbols does not constitute a final adjudication of the factional dispute and is intended only for the upcoming by-elections.
