Greek police dismantle organized telephone‑fraud rings targeting elderly

Police operations in several Greek regions have broken up organized telephone‑fraud groups that targeted elderly women. The schemes used callers impersonating doctors, relatives or electricity‑company technicians to convince victims to hand over cash and jewelry. Arrests include a 24‑year‑old in Chios, a 46‑year‑old “collector”, two teens in Volos, and three members (including a 16‑year‑old) in Lamia. Victims surrendered thousands of euros and valuables—jewelry valued up to €30,000 per case—with total proceeds exceeding €110,000. Authorities seized cash, jewelry, mobile phones and other items, many of which were returned to the victims. The coordinated busts underscore a nationwide effort to curb scams against senior citizens.
