Man arrested in Bangladesh for AI-generated blackmail of ex-wife

Police in Bangladesh have arrested 27-year-old Russel Rana for using artificial intelligence to create pornographic images of his former wife to blackmail her. The incident occurred in the Madhupur area of Tangail.

According to reports, Rana used AI technology to superimpose his ex-wife's face onto obscene images and videos. He allegedly demanded 1 million BDT (approximately 10 lakh taka) from the victim and her family, providing a mobile banking number for the transaction. When the victim and her current husband refused to pay, Rana distributed the AI-generated content on social media.

The victim, who divorced Rana in May 2024 following allegations of domestic abuse and drug addiction, filed a complaint on August 17. Following the investigation, police apprehended Rana on September 9 at a poultry farm staff quarters in Moulvibazar. He was subsequently produced in court and sent to Tangail District Jail. Authorities are continuing efforts to identify and arrest other potential accomplices.
