AI-generated blackmail arrest in Bangladesh

Overview

Police in Bangladesh arrested 27-year-old Russel Rana in connection with an AI-generated blackmail scheme in the Madhupur area of Tangail. Rana allegedly used artificial intelligence to superimpose his ex-wife’s face onto obscene images and videos to extort 1 million BDT from her and her family.

After the victim and her current husband refused to pay the ransom, Rana reportedly distributed the deepfake content on social media. The victim, who had previously divorced Rana following allegations of domestic abuse and drug addiction, filed a formal complaint on August 17. Following an investigation, authorities apprehended Rana on September 9 at a poultry farm staff quarters in Moulvibazar. He has since been sent to Tangail District Jail, and police are working to identify potential accomplices.
