Cleveland Police launch crackdown following fatal A66 crash

Cleveland Police have launched a major crackdown on suspected organized crime following a fatal head-on collision on the A66. The crash, involving a Volkswagen Passat traveling the wrong way, killed two police officers, PC Matthew Blades and PC Tom Clough, as well as five young men: Cole Worthy, Theo Rae, Makai Saddington, Michael Cahill, and Jakub Matusiak.

Authorities have arrested 24 people in connection with a series of related incidents in the area, including suspected firearms, drug, and arson offenses. Recent arrests include four men suspected of criminal damage with intent to endanger life after a vehicle rammed a house, and others linked to an alleged caravan arson. One 21-year-old man has been charged with possession with intent to supply a class B drug.

In response to the tragedy, Middlesbrough FC has called on supporters to pay tribute to the fallen officers during their upcoming home game. King Charles III has also written to the families of the officers to express his condolences.
