Man faces charges for attempted murder of father in Dominican Republic

A man, identified as Engels Francis Espaillat Espinal, is facing charges for the attempted murder of his father in the Arroyo Hondo II sector of the Distrito Nacional. According to the Public Ministry, the attack occurred on October 1 around 2:30 p.m. while the victim was watching television.

The prosecution alleges that Espaillat Espinal struck his father in the head with an exercise weight, causing him to fall, and subsequently attempted to asphyxiate him by covering his mouth and applying pressure to his neck. The victim was able to call for help, and neighbors intervened to prevent the attack from being completed. The victim required medical attention for his injuries.

Espaillat Espinal was arrested in flagrante delicto. The Judicial Office of Permanent Attention Services of the Distrito Nacional has ordered three months of preventive detention, to be served at the Las Parras Correction and Rehabilitation Center. The Public Ministry has provisionally classified the acts as aggravated attempted homicide against an ascendant.
