Criminal prosecutions in the Dominican Republic

Overview

The Dominican Republic Public Ministry has initiated legal proceedings and requested preventive detention in several recent criminal cases involving violence and theft.

In the Distrito Nacional, Engels Francis Espaillat Espinal faces charges of aggravated attempted homicide against an ascendant after allegedly striking his father with an exercise weight and attempting to asphyxiate him. He has been ordered to serve three months of preventive detention.

In Santo Domingo Oeste, a judge has imposed three months of preventive detention against Santiago Ángeles Willmore. He is accused of physically assaulting his 86-year-old mother, a sister with a visual disability, and a seven-year-old nephew with autism spectrum disorder. The Public Ministry reported that the child suffered a mild cranial trauma after being struck with a wooden object, and medical examinations revealed old, healed scars consistent with a pattern of ongoing child abuse.

Additionally, authorities are seeking detention for Eslyn Yoel De los Ángeles following an armed robbery in a commercial plaza. The suspect allegedly stole over RD$3.6 million and shot a motorcyclist in the head during an escape attempt. A judicial hearing for De los Ángeles is scheduled for October 8, 2026.
