Man recovers from life-threatening scrub typhus in Can Tho

Doctors at Hoan My Cuu Long Hospital in Can Tho have successfully treated a 59-year-old man from An Giang province who suffered from severe scrub typhus. The patient developed sepsis, pneumonia, acute respiratory failure, and multi-organ damage after being bitten by a mite while gathering medicinal herbs in the forest.

The patient initially ignored a small, painless black scab on his hip, but later developed high fever and a cough. After being transferred to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for specialized antibiotics and respiratory support, his condition stabilized within five days. Medical experts noted that scrub typhus is caused by the bacterium Orientia tsutsugamushi and is typically transmitted through larval mite bites, often affecting those working in forests or brush.
