Scrub typhus cases in Vietnam

Overview

Scrub typhus, caused by the bacterium Orientia tsutsugamushi and transmitted via larval mite bites, has resulted in severe medical cases in Vietnam.

In late August, a 59-year-old man from An Giang province recovered at Hoan My Cuu Long Hospital in Can Tho after suffering from sepsis, pneumonia, acute respiratory failure, and multi-organ damage. The patient had initially ignored a small black scab before developing high fever and a cough.

Shortly thereafter, a 14-year-old patient from Dien Bien was admitted to the National Hospital for Tropical Diseases in critical condition. This patient experienced septic shock, pneumonia, acute kidney failure, and liver damage. Medical staff identified a suspected mite bite lesion under the chest, and the patient required mechanical ventilation and blood filtration to manage the illness.
