The Apothecary Diaries live-action series set for 2028 on Prime Video
Prime Video has announced a live-action series adaptation of the popular franchise ‘The Apothecary Diaries’ (Kusuriya no Hitorigoto), scheduled for a worldwide exclusive release in 2028. The series, based on the light novels by Natsu Hyuuga, will be a joint production between Amazon MGM Studios and TOHO.
Japanese actress Mana Ashida has been cast in the lead role of Maomao, the intelligent apothecary who solves mysteries within an imperial palace. The production is directed by Yuki Saito, with a screenplay by Erika Yoshida. To ensure high production standards, the team spent six months filming on large-scale sets designed to recreate the historical atmosphere of the imperial court, with significant investment in costumes, art direction, and visual effects.
In a broader strategic move, Prime Video also announced plans to more than double its investment in original Japanese content over the next two years. This initiative aims to transform Japan from a major content consumer into a global hub for original productions, including anime, live-action series, and sports content.
