Manaus begins construction on first Gastronomic Street
The city of Manaus has begun construction on its first ‘Gastronomic Street’ located on Rua Ferreira Pena in the historic center. The project, part of the ‘Nosso Centro’ program, involves closing the section of the street between 10 de Julho and Ramos Ferreira to vehicular traffic, making it a pedestrian-only zone.
Local authorities, including the Municipal Institute of Urban Mobility (IMMU), expect the works to be completed by November. The initiative aims to strengthen the region's culinary and tourism vocation, encourage the restoration of historic buildings, and attract new businesses. Due to its location in the historic center, the intervention received approval from the National Institute of Historic and Artistic Heritage (Iphan).
To accommodate the construction, significant traffic changes have been implemented on surrounding streets. Rua José Clemente has been divided into two sections with one-way and two-way flows to manage access to Rua Joaquim Sarmento, while Rua Lobo D’Almada has also faced closures and diversions to maintain vehicle flow between Avenida Epaminondas and Avenida Eduardo Ribeiro.
