Manaus Gastronomic Street urban development
Overview
The city of Manaus has commenced construction on its first ‘Gastronomic Street’ on Rua Ferreira Pena in the historic center. Part of the ‘Nosso Centro’ program, the project involves converting a section of the street into a pedestrian-only zone to bolster tourism, culinary vocation, and the restoration of historic buildings. The project has received approval from the National Institute of Historic and Artistic Heritage (Iphan).
To manage the construction, the Municipal Institute of Urban Mobility (IMMU) has implemented significant traffic reorganizations. This includes the introduction of a ‘mão inglesa’ (two-way traffic on a single roadway) system on José Clemente Street between Eduardo Ribeiro Avenue and Joaquim Sarmento Street. Additional closures and diversions have been established on streets such as Lobo D’Almada to maintain vehicle flow during the works, which are expected to be completed by November.
